Meet Malachi, an 18-year-old with a vibrant spirit, a deep sense of cultural identity, and a strong Christian faith that guides his values and goals. With a vision to one day mentor and uplift Indigenous youth, Malachi has been exploring meaningful ways to grow his confidence and life skills.
Supported by Ability Action Australia, Malachi works closely with Craig, Occupational Therapist. Together, they set a personal goal for Malachi: to learn how to cook meals for his family – an aspiration rooted in independence and care for those around him. He also shared that public speaking and confidence had been ongoing challenges, but he was motivated to develop these skills to step into future leadership roles.
Through therapy focused on life skills, Malachi has built independence and self-assurance in a way that is meaningful to him – starting with cooking. Gradually, his confidence grew as he took on more tasks in the kitchen, progressing toward preparing an entire meal for his family.
Importantly, space was created for Malachi to reflect on his values, identity, and aspirations. He began to speak more openly about his goals and, in his own time, embraced a new opportunity assisting with Bible studies at his former high school. This role aligns beautifully with his desire to mentor and be a positive influence in his community.
Whether at home or in the community, Malachi is building confidence through roles that matter to him – roles that reflect his purpose, identity, and hopes for the future.
