Functional Mobility Occupational Therapy
We can pinpoint the right mobility equipment to get you moving and reaching your goals sooner
Being able to get around is key to leading an independent and active life. With support, people with a disability can overcome difficulties with their mobility and complete daily tasks to fully reach their potential at home, in the workplace, and in the community.
You may have certain physical limitations that prevent you from being as mobile as you would like. Perhaps you’re having trouble undertaking everyday tasks independently, or you need help moving around your home or communicating with other people.
Our highly trained NDIS Occupational Therapists use the latest research and technologies in their field to complete a functional capacity assessment of your individual needs and situation, and identify the most appropriate equipment, systems or modifications to support your mobility needs.
Working closely with you and your family or support circle, we can recommend modifications to your home or daily living solutions and mobility equipment for disabled individuals, to help you get about more easily and perform your tasks more safely and securely.

Home modifications
Changes to the structure, layout or fittings in your home may be included in your NDIS plan if your disability is preventing you from safely and easily accessing those areas you use often. These reasonable and necessary supports will help meet your needs and allow you to pursue your goals.
Home modifications can be simple and low-cost, such as grab rails in the bathroom area where the risk of slips and falls is high, or more complex, such as when ramps need to be added to an entranceway, or the bathroom needs redesign to provide shower access.
Other assistive technology
Your plan may include other items of assistive technology, which will help you perform tasks that you would otherwise be unable to do, or increase their ease and safety.
These items cover both off-the-shelf items such as non-slip bathmats, and tactile dots, to more complex items available from specialised suppliers, like power-assisted wheelchairs, ceiling hoists and bath lifts.
We can help you identify which assistive technology, from the very simple to the more complex, is right for you. With the broad range of aids and equipment available on the market, our qualified Occupational Therapists will work out the best possible solution for your needs, removing any guesswork from the decision-making process as well as ensuring the technology is supplied and set up correctly to avoid any risk of injury.

Mobile Occupational Therapy: Frequently Asked Questions
Mobility equipment for disabled people can take a variety of forms, including wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walkers, stairlifts, handrails and communication devices. Ability Action Australia’s qualified Occupational Therapists consider your needs when recommending mobility aids to ensure you can undertake everyday tasks independently.
Mobility aids are a subset of mobility or assistive devices that specifically focus on ensuring those with disabilities are still able to get around. While all mobility aids are mobility devices, not all mobility aids are devices. For example, a wheelchair is both a mobility aid and a mobility device, while a hearing aid is simply an assistive device.
Ability Action Australia’s team of Occupational Therapists remove the stress from choosing mobility equipment. By completing assessments of your physical ability, home layout and mobility needs, our Occupational Therapists are able to match you with the right mobility equipment for your needs.
